While in NOLA a couple of weeks ago, we bought some beignets at CDM. They were good but seemed more like fried bread (no yellow, eggy color). The muffalettas at Central Grocery didn't seem to have as much olive salad or meet, more bread than I remembered. The philly cheese steak sandwiches at our local dive, Nino's, didn't seem to be as good as what we had last year. In fact, everything we had "out" (we were staying with relatives so only ate out a few times) in the first week of our stay didn't measure up to previous meals. I was starting to think that maybe I was sick since everything just didn't taste as good.
Then, we went to Jacque Mos and I knew it wasn't me. The meal there was fabulous and the service doubly so. On our waitresses recommendation, I ordered the duck breast (I have never had good luck with duck and was hesitant). But it was sublime. Our first time there but it won't be our last.
We also had a meal at La Provence in LaCombe (sp). Unfortunately, my leg of lamb was overcooked so a little tough and not as flavorful as I had hoped. The other three in our party had great meals, tho. My husband ordered quail gumbo in addition to the other courses in the prix fix menu and it was superb. The pate was to die for (they sell in to take home, also). Overall, a very good experience.
Also had a good, inexpensive meal at Bangkok Thai on St. Charles and Carrollton. We were also glad to see La Madeleine open at that location as it was a place we'd pop into to get a quick bite to eat.
Happy to see more and more restaurants open. Next time we're there, we plan to hit more of them.
