The recent messages regarding the old Chicago restaurants, Batts and Rudi's, prompts me to ask if anyone remembers the Villa Ghirgenti restaurant at Paulina and Howard. I had my first pizza there. My brother was then (late 1950s) a student at Northwestern, and when I traveled up to visit him from our home in Southern Illinois, we always went to the "Villa."
Wow! I had never tasted anything like this from my part of Illinois!
For several years after that, whenever I was (infrequently) in Chicago, I always took the El to the Howard Street station and ran down Paulina to get a refresher course in pizza-art. My profession has allowed me to visit Chicago on a regular basis since, but I went back, I guess in the early 70s and the Villa was gone.
Query: does it live on in another location or incarnation?
