Help resolve wildly different ideas for lunch near(ish) Grand Central

I'm meeting a friend for lunch near Grand Central on a Thursday later this month. I'm in town for the weekend, and he's going to be on a somewhat extended lunch break, ultimately headed to Penn Station. My request to my friend was for a suggestion for a fun, cool place with good food, maybe Italian or Mediterranean or interesting salads with (and this is important) good wine. His two suggestions were Connolly's and Annie Moore's, both Irish bars. Sigh. I'm pretty sure that neither of those places are what I had in mind. Any suggestions for a middle ground between an Irish bar and a prix fix type of place that would satisfy my need for good food and wine and his need for a place that's "not stuffy or overpriced." Under $30 for food (pre-tax, tip, drinks), preferably a place we could sit at the bar. Thanks for any help you can provide!
