report: yuzu sushi & grill

jack | Feb 26, 200509:59 AM

just went to yuzu for dinner last night with my wife and another couple. thought i'd contribute to the board. here's what i had tasted, my own ratings for each dish, services and ambience, and some thoughts:

sake tasting flight (8/10)
poki salad (8/10)
salmon carpaccio (7/10)
bonito (8/10)
bluefin tuna toro (9/10)
spicy rock shrimp roll (8/10)
grilled beef asparagus (6/10)
tempura (9/10)
tempura udon noodle (8/10)
tamago (9/10)
2 beers and 1 additional glass of a particular sake

total bill came out to be approx. $165 ($82/couple) including taxes and tips.

service: very polite and casual, but spread thin

ambience: very very very noisy due to the size of the restaurant (4-5 tables plus 6-person sushi bar), constantly flowing drinks, and the voice-raising effects of semi-drunkenness

the food was great (sushi sized generously), if you can get it before you finish dousing off your own hunger with alcohol. somehow the kitchen and the lone sushi chef are not as efficient as we'd hoped, so we spent a great deal of time waiting for our food. our first dish did not come until approx. 45 minutes after our order. we were constantly hungered for at least 2/3 of the meal.

here's a tip that we all agreed on: as soon as you sit, order the hot food first (deep-fried items are the fasted, followed up grilled), then decide if you wish to have the sushi items, which are actually quite good and worth the wait if you are not distracted by the hungry rumble in your stomach.

i would say this is not a date place, nor a place to hold decent conversation. i felt a ringing in my ear once when a neighboring table increased the decibel level of their conversation.

an anecdote: at one point, we busted out laughing because my wife noted that she would like to order more, but she's not sure if we will still be around by the time the ordered dish is to come out.

i would like to go back again, but will probably avoid weekend.
