Executive summary: what the heck is a good restaurant like this doing in Visalia?
Last week, when I traveled out to Visalia for a business obligation, one of my goals was to find a decent restaurant at which to entertain a high mucky-muck this week. Heard of the Vintage Press, and went solo for dinner. Excellent lamb chops, very good service, and excellent wine at decent prices (1999 Chat. La Nerthe Chateauneuf de Pape: dark, spicy and intense).
So yesterday, I picked up Mr. Mucky-muck at LAX, we braved rush hour traffic and sped across the San Joaquin valley floor to hit Visalia around 8:30. For such a sleepy town, the restaurant was quite packed. Rack of lamb for me this time (I know, boring to repeat), a nice filet in a port reduction sauce for Mr. Mucky-muck, and more fine wine (1999 Turley Zinfandel, Duarte Vineyard - wow) and good service. Particularly impressive was the fine treatment of the vegetables and sides the accompanied our meat. So, if passing through or staying in Visalia, dine at the Vintage Press.
