We have less than 48 hours, so we've been sticking to Wells, even though there are many temptations on offer further afield. We have a housekeeping cottage, doing only one meal out per day.
Yesterday it was the good ol' Maine Diner. Still there, still modestly priced and pretty decent. I got clam chowder (just OK) and egg salad sandwich (good); traveling companion enjoyed her eggs and bacon. Not very houndish of me, I admit, but I go there more for the homey atmosphere than the food. Possibly I'm ordering wrong?
Today, Billy's Chowder House, where the chowder rather unexpectedly lived up to its hype: thin, creamy-brothy-briny, crowded with clams and potatoes, and absolutely delicious. I further indulged in a half-&-half platter of fried whole belly clams and haddock, which was excellent. Friend's grilled swordfish looked excellent as well. Advertised rolls and butter did not materialize, but as I'm just noticing that now, I can't really say we missed them.
Tomorrow it'll be breakfast on our way out of town. We're thinking Congdon's Doughnuts unless someone posts a better suggestion tonight.
