This is my second visit to B in old Oakland. I went about 5 months ago and would say that the restaurant is getting better. In the interest of disclosure (I so want to like this restaurant as it is in my neighborhood!)
Last night I had the plank salmon with asparagus and romesco sauce $22. This was very good with pleasant smoky flavors in the fish picked up in the grilled asparagus and the romesco sauce. The portobello pizza $8 was less successful. The flavors were fine ( corn, portobello mushroom, roasted red peppers, and peppercress salad on top) but the crust was lackluster. It was chewy and soft. The crust tasted precooked and then toppings assembled afterwards and reheated, which yields a pizza that never really feels together.
The chocolate bread pudding $8 was warm, moist and delicious. It was nicely complimented with carmel sauce and a lovely scoop of hazelnut ice cream. The rest of the desserts did not sound nearly as interesting.
The wine list is a draw for me as it has many interesting choices that are well priced. However, the bottle I ordered a Lane Tanner Pinot was out of stock and from the sigh and explanation from the waiter this issue is not uncommon. I was offered a taste of the house pinot Elk cove ( very nice) and a recommendation of the Savannah-Chenelle Pinot which I chose. The wine is served at cellar temp which I really appreciate. All and all I would go back again. I am hopeful that the restaurant will continue to improve as its business grows
