Report from Maui and Kauai

marathon man | Sep 30, 2003 07:11 PM

Just back from the Maui Marathon, having spent five days on that island and five days on Kauai. Had some great fish and sushi, some mediocre Italian food, and some so-so pizza. Here's a brief rundown. Thanks to all who recommended Mama's Fish House--one of the best meals of the entire trip. Everything was just right there, from the view to the wine glasses, to the just caught fish. Loved the atmosphere too. Pretty good meal our first night (after a long, long flight from Baltimore) at Cafe Caio, at the Fairmont Kea Lani hotel, some pasta (don't remember exactly what we had). Our meal at Sansei in Kapalua was outstanding--very creative sushi of various sorts. Our least favorite meal was at Sarento's on the Beach--didn't care for the atmosphere, the pushiness of the wait staff or the mandatory photograph. The food was good but not great like Sansei or Mama's. Not at all worth the high prices. And our other meal at Bada Bing in Kihei was kind of fun, a nice change from the high priced places, but the pizza was fairly uninspired. The server had quite an attitude, but in a bad/good way. On to Kauai...we were staying at the Hyatt Regency, so planned dinner at Tidepool's upon arrival. The thatched roofed huts on the fish lagoon were kind of fun...you can feed the fish, and create quite a frenzy, but onto the food. It was fantastic...great sushi appetizers and superb fish. Definitely worth a visit. Had sushi at Kintaro's in Kapaa, which was also quite good. After visiting Ke'e Beach and a hike, we went to Zelo's in Hanalei. Admittedly we were tired, and sweaty, but food is food. Meal was OK, not great. Portions were huge, but I'd rather have quality over quantity. Next night we had "brick over pizza" at Brick Oven Pizza. Not all that great either. Does Hawaii have any decent pizza? Our last dinner was at the Beach House in Poipu. Very romantic, as advertised. And the food was also excellent. Salads were out of this world. Fish was fantastic too. The much heralded, order ahead, chocolate melt was only so-so. Finally, breakfast at Dali Deli in Kaloa was quite good, as were the fish tacos at Keiko's Resort in Poipu. Our trip was great and so were most of our meals. Aloha and Mahalo!
