Saturday night my family and I had dinner at Babbo. I was underwhelmed by the whole experience. The service was arrogant (both the waiter and the sommelier) and not particularly knowledgeable about the menu. The appetizers were dismal: the grilled octopus was overcooked and very tough, the wild king salmon tasted of plastic packaging, the lamb tongue overpowered by vinegar. Entrees were somewhat better (we had branzino, vitello tonato - too salty, mint love letters - nothing to write home about, and two-minute calamari - the best dish of the night: tender and spicy).
I frankly don't see what all the hype is about. I've certainly had better Italian food in the city and did not have to call 30 days in advance for a reservation or put up with dismal service. I wouldn't recommend Babbo to my friends and probably would not go back there myself. There's just too many other great restaurants sans attitutide and with better food.
