Report on "Dim Sum for a Newby"

This is a report on my Trip to Golden Unicorn. I had solicited Chowhound opinions under the posting heading “Dim Sum for a Newby....” posted on 4/25/03

As I stated in my original post; two of my friends had never done Dim Sum before, and the third had only gone long ago. That’s why I chose Golden Unicorn. I figured that while some other places may have slightly better Dim sum, Golden Unicorn would make a good starting point as a Dim Sum standard. Plus the pictures and English language descriptions of what is on the carts would make things a lot easier.

Even though I had been warned about the chance of a long wait at 1:00 on a Sunday, we were pleasantly surprised that the lobby was relatively empty. I arrived at Golden Unicorn at 1:10pm, where I met up with my three friends. Our party of four only waited about five minutes and was then promptly seated on the 3rd floor.

Our table was away from the kitchen, but on the side of the restaurant that is at the beginning of the “loop” that the carts were doing. So while nothing got to us piping hot, everything was still adequately warm by the time we dug into it.

As I’ve said, my companions were Dim Sum newbies...so they avoided the more unique offerings like Steamed Tripe, Duck’s feet, Coconut & Bean bars etc. So, our Dim-sum selections might be considered boring by some here. However, everything we did eat (A complete list is below) was delicious. All the steamed wrappers were translucent, and all exploded with moist flavor when they were bitten into. The little steamed shrimp dumplings were especially delicious. The Taro balls were a hit as well, along with the Shrimp/vegtable Dim Sum

What really made the afternoon ws the fact that our table service and all service provided by the cart attendants was excellent. All of our questions regarding the dim-sum were answered easily. All plates were removed quickly as we finished each course. New plates were provided to us twice during our time there. Additional napkins, hot towels, tea service, etc., were all provided for us quickly and excellently. I can not stress how prompt and attentive all the service was

Each Dim Sum plate had either three or four individual items on it. Sometimes these were cut in half by the attendant, upon presentation. (The only exceptions to this were the Duck plate, and the Prawn plate. Which were nearly the size of a standard dish)

In the end, our bill totaled $80.00, including a 20% gratuity. This gratuity was added on by the establishment and included in the total. Normally, I would have a problem with a mandatory gratuity equaling 20% being added on for a party only numbering four. But, given our excellent service, and the number of people who did service out table, I overlooked it with pleasure.

Without a doubt, my friends are now dim-sum converts. Soon, I’ll get them to try new places and a more diverse selection of Dim sum. Additionally, whenever friends are in from out of town and want to try their hand at Dim sum, I’ll take them to Golden Unicorn without hesitation.

My sincere thanks to all those who replied to “Dim Sum for a Newby.” The outing was a complete success.
