I'm weeks and weeks behind in posting my notebook notes to the board, but I thought I'd try and catch up a little this afternoon.
It was a return visit to 93 Harbord for the chowhound dinner crowd, as we'd been there once before and loved it. Other than the specials, the menu was largely unchanged since the last visit.
With the specials, we ordered one of each appetizer to share. Sadly, they were out of the beef and asparagus that we'd loved so much the last time, but the seafood was still a huge hit. Everything was devoured to the last bite, then we had more bread brought over so we could sop up the sauces from the plates. The rich, brown, nutty sauce from the chicken wraps and the sweet, tart, fruity sauce from seafood were especially good.
I ordered the lamb tagine as my main, whilst others opted for the duck special, the fishsteak special that turned out to be a steak steak special, and there were some other non-special orders as well. Oddly, no one ordered the kibbeh that had been considered the best of the best when were were there before. I guess we all wanted something new. The tagine was excellent, softly braised, but still with texture.
We grabbed desserts, as well. I snagged the last order of baklava, which was stuffed with figs and not nearly as sweet as anticipated. It was served warm, and had a gentle sweetness that was wonderfully pleasant. All the desserts I tried were less sweet than you might have expected, which was a nice surprise.
Service was spotty as it tends to be. An extra guest was graciously accommodated, but the waiter didn't really know what the specials were (mixing up fish with beef is a pretty big mistake). Also, as with the last time we dined there, water refills were hard to come by. The staff is genial enough, they're just not very good.
