I was coordinating dinner for a group of people from the area (some New Yorkers, some out-of-towners) who gather every year in New York for a dinner not associated with any particular event, though proximity to Lincoln Center is important. For the past two years we have used O'Neals' which has just announced that it's closing (I had already made reservations for July 10, and yes we know that is a dead time for concerts). Now I am faced with the need to find a comparable place and unfortunately I am not one of the city dwellers (in fact I live in the Adirondacks and was doing everything long distance and online). Those who are NYC people have started suggesting places, with Josephina's coming up twice now. But it is one thing to be the liaison for a known destination that everyone already liked, and another to pick one from among many while coordinating all the members' wishes from a distance via a message board. Therefore I'm relying on my highly knowledgeable Chowhound friends to help me to narrow down the choices, perhaps by providing a short list that I can compare with what the members, who are varyingly knowledgeable about eating in Manhattan, are telling me. The place should if possible be comparable to O'Neals' in cuisine, atmosphere, and price range. It needs to have a private room that could accommodate between 20 and 40 people, which is available for dinners running from 5:00 through the evening. I will be very grateful for any help you can give.
