remedy for wilting lettuce

Every once in awhile, my convenient produce market is about to close and I dash in for leaf lettuce. The only heads left have wilting leaves on the outer third of the head. Normally, I would pass on a head like this, but time is short. I thought you could shave off part of the stem and plop the lettuce stem in water to revive the leaves. The logic was that the lettuce would absorb new water and spring back to life. I've tried this twice, without success. Has anyone tried this with good results? What about other remedies?
