Lately new restaurants in Chinatown have not been a common occurrence so it was with great interest that I spied newly opened Regent China Inn where Regent Seafood used to be at the corner of Main and Ord. At first I thought that maybe it was the old restaurant with a slightly new name since everything appeared to be as it was inside the restaurant. But it turns out this is a new operation, which in retrospect is not a good thing. I should have known that something was amiss as while walking to my table I heard a patron complain that the waiter brought him the wrong dish. Further hints of future trouble were that we were not given menus for nearly 10 minutes (though we were occupied with the house soup) and other patrons were fidgeting at their foodless tables. We eventually learned with the fidgeting was about, having to wait 35 minutes for our order to be served. Actually the wait would have been only 30 minutes since as it turns out our dishes were brought out five minutes earlier and left on a table, as the waiter couldn't figure out which table had ordered those items. This resulted in our food being only mildly warm. One other noteworthy point is that there are partially finished drywall slabs inside the restaurant which means the new owners probably don't have enough capital to close the place while they remodel it. Oh yeah--the food. It's OK, and for $4.25 for an array of lunch specials it's certainly a good deal. Nevertheless, I'd stay away from this place for quite a while.
