Where to get Refried Beans?

TastyJon | Jan 23, 2003 03:02 AM

This might sound nutty in a town of 10,000 corner Mexican eateries, but where can I buy a pint or two of really fresh and velvety refried beans for my Super Bowl soiree, which will feature some kind of taco/fajita/quesadilla buffet?

I'm near the 405/10 interchange.

When I was I kid I detested the stuff (beans? refried?), but then I learned to love variations of this simplistic starch done right. Somehow good places have learned to make good beans, just as some places have elevated potatos to an art. But it need not be elitism... one of my fave places serving good beans is a car wash.

I've not really noticed a fast food place pushing to-go beans (Campos), or any supermarket. Even my corner Mexi-mart doesn't offer them in the deli. The canned stuff sucks. I'm sure I can learn to make them from scratch, but there's no time. Thus I proffer this post. Where to find reasonably priced heaps of fresh RB without too much trouble?
