I was driving down the Embarcadero Freeway the other evening, admiring the view of the Bay Bridge while passing Pier 30-32 and the venerable Red's Java House, thinking how amazing it is that this waterfront institution is still there and going strong after so many years -- when suddenly I noticed a large banner hung across the front window advertising a Happy Hour, complete with a Patio Garden, Irish Coffees and mixed drinks!?
What gives?! New owners, maybe? Longshoremen and salty sea captains mixing with financial district suits?! Surely, the original Red himself would not look kindly on such a situation. Then again, these are different times, and maybe the days of $4.75 for a hamburger, fries and a beer are over? I hope it ain't so, but this bears some additional investigation.
I'll be at two of the Giants/Red Sox games this weekend, and will try to stop by for a closer look. Any excuse for a burger, beer, french fries served in a paper cup and a spectacular view of the water is OK by me.
