Red wine Risotto

When I was in Verona this summer, I had the pleasure of tasting this dish. It was almost maroon-purple in color, and I am assuming it was prepared in a typical risotto way, with the substitution of wine for stock.

Has anyone had this dish or does anyone have an opinion of what type of red wine one would use?

It was heavenly!
