Red Onion Question

I am making a salad for a potluck Christmas dinner and would like to add sliced red onions. I seem to remember a red onion discussion on a cooking show. As I recall they said that it is a good idea to marinate red onions in vinegar for a short period of time to make them more digestible and palatable. Is this true? Thanks.
