I just moved to Brooklyn from San Francisco and have been surprised to find that many of the fancier restaurants in New York are bistros. While they are all very fine, I find myself occasionally longing for a place that's lighter on the pork chops and brisket and steak frites and heavier on innovative combinations of vegetables.
I'm not looking for a vegetarian restaurant, but something along the lines of Alice Waters updated. (You know, it goes better with the margaritas and Chardonnay.) Cheaper is better, but all suggestions would be appreciated. It doesn't have to be trendy either.
