Beer, Cider, & Sake

Recipe for brisket recommends a dark beer like Guinness or Samuel Smith. Not sure what to buy.

Im not so familiar with beer. The brisket will have a rub of thyme garlic, bay leaves, dried chiles, and cracked black pepper. What are my best bet? Would a Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout be good? Guinness Extra Stout or Guinness Drought?
