Four of us from the Napa Valley, two making their first trip had a fantastic time eating our way around Manhattan combined with a bit of sightseeing etc. Here's a brief summary of places we ate.
Thursday after late evening arrival: PJ Clarkes on 3rd ave: Cheeseburger good and a couple of poorly made martinis.Enjoyed the room and late busy atmosphere.
Friday: Late breakfast at Carnegie deli: It may not be the best in Manhattan but for me it was very good pastrami sandwich. Loved the sour pickles and the wise and witty long time server.
Friday lunch: Bar Bouloud, charcuterie and cheese along with a nice Rhone wine. The small plate charcuterie was a little disappointing, very good but not much variety.Seems like it was all speck. The 3 cheese plate was delicious and a nice variety but very small portions
Friday dinner: Maialino! The best food and service on the entire trip. Not to mention a nice space and actually able to hear one another. Had a variety of apps including the veal heart, loved them all. Split two pastas the squid ink and the pepe e cacio both very good. And the Maialino gotta give thanks to RGR for talking it up , it was that good.My favorite dish of the trip.
Late evening at nearby Petes Tavern was fun.
Saturday breakfast a crappy bagel from a food cart across from the hotel.
Saturday lunch: Ma Peche Not really blown away by anything maybe came in with high expectations. Only other visit to a David Chang restaurant was Momofuku Saam and had the pork bun which was awesome and rich.
Saturday evening planned on eating before a show at Marseille but didn't eat before or after.
Sunday brunch: Minetta Tavern fantastic French Toast and good spicy Bloody Mary's. Great space and enjoyed the bartenders.
Artichoke Pizza: Was told the artichoke slice was the way to go but I found it way too creamy and rich for my taste. Last year ate at Artichoke on E 14th, had the Sicilian slice and didn't enjoy that either. Guess its just not my taste.
One if by Land: roaming around stopped in for a drink and listen to the jazz. Not particuarly friendly perhaps we wern't dressed as nice as the rest.
Blind Tiger Great beer selection and a fine grilled cheese sandwich.
Spotted Pig: Another enjoyable spot and stop.
Dinner: Gramercy Tavern Have been here several times, great service think I choose wrong had the mushroom lasange and did not like it at all. Had a taste of some other items around the table, first time I didn't really enjoy the food at GT
Monday breakfast: A bagel at a nondesript store on 8th ave somewhere between 45&49th. Good dense bagel. This place had every kind of food, guess you can get a decent bagel many many places in Manhattan and not just the main listed places H&H, Essa, etc. Dont know where this place got there bagels.
Monday lunch: Inoteca on Rivington Had a number of items that were pretty good but the truffled egg toast was killer.
Balthazar: Oysters and clams with a Muscadet. Good except for the larger oysters, hope they weren't bluepoints.
Dinner: Scarpetta Definately didn't enjoy as much as Maialino. Was looking forward to the expierence. An ok Negroi, wine list is fairly pricey. The spaghetti, foie gras, and mushroom polenta did not disappoint. AS good as advertised. Some of the other dishes short ribs, burrata didn't care for although generally like these dishes alot. For me overhyped bread basket. Nice room, bar but had a corporate feel perhaps because almost every diner was a man in a suit.
Monday lunch: The Modern Bar room Next to Maialino the best. Great service, every dish beautiful and scrumptous. Had the tart flambe, spicy steak tartare, scallops and sausage and sourkraut. Food was modern art in presentation and just damn tasty!
