Where have all the Real Sandwiches gone?

Flynn | Feb 10, 2005 03:39 PM

Lately I've been craving Dagwood-type sandwiches and all I'm mostly finding in Manhattan are pre-made panini-style sandwiches that wouldn't fill my 5-year-old nephew's cavities.

I don't want pre-made sandwiches with ingredients that someone else already picked out for me. I want to pick and choose real roast turkey or chicken, chunky egg or tuna salad (not mushy stuff that passes for it), nice roasted peppers, not pickled slivers out of the jar. Good cheeses to complement the turkey or ham.

Does anybody know where these wonderful sandwiches are still made besides going to the heavy hitters like Zabar's?
