A real Hound find off I 15 freeway

Zoe | Feb 5, 2004 02:31 PM

The wasteland on the I 15 coming back to the Inland Empire is pitted with a miserable array of fast food joints. Just by chance we got off the freeway at the Centre drive exit in Escondido to the following:
Centre City Cafe, owned by a Serb family and the MENU: Stuffed cabbage rolls and Chicken and Dumplings on the Wednesday special just like Aunt Masha used to make (OK I didn't have an Aunt Masha!) -just plate licking. The rolls were filled with a wonderful combo of ground meat, peppers, onion and a light light tomato sauce, served with vegetables and real mashed potatoes. Dumplings were fluffy and light and the cream gravy was just plain good food. These specials were $5.99. Thursday's special is Roast Pork and sauerkraut. I asked the owner, Alex (woman) whether or not the cook was Serb and she said that on Wednesday and Thursday a Bulgarian woman (who speaks only Bulgarian) comes in to cook these special dishes, which is obviously why they taste the way they do. It was just heaven.
