Ravenous Café – Reborn in Healdsburg

Melanie Wong | May 17, 201207:51 PM

My Cinco de Mayo started with opening day at the Healdsburg farmers market. Then I swung by the Raven Theatre to check on progress for Ravenette.

The familiar lettering, carried over from the old venue, proclaimed RAVENOUS, on the white frontage. A full-fledged Ravenous Café had been reborn, not the diminutive Ravenette.

The glass door was swung wide open. Taped to it was Friday night’s menu with the familiar handwritten script and as many choices as found at the bigger location.

I poked my head inside and asked if it was open for lunch this day. Yes, the café reopened two days ago and serves lunch and dinner. Eight tables spaced closely together can seat up to 22. The phone was already ringing off the hook with long-time customers eager for reservations.

Since it was the 5 of May, I wanted the pair of fish tacos, $13.75, from the day’s menu. A basket of house-baked bread helped me while away the time.

From my table in the far corner, I could hear the cooks debating the best way to cook the fish to meet my request for “barely done”. Whatever they did, the filet of yellowtail turned out juicy and on point. Dressed with fresh pico de gallo, lime-spiked crema, a flurry of shredded cabbage, onion and cilantro, the fish and garnishes were cradled in single-ply tender handmade corn tortillas. Great roasted corn flavor in those tortillas and they almost stole the show. The plate was finished with salad greens and Ravenous’s signature carrot ribbons in a light vinaigrette.

Ravenous Café has been open for two weeks now. Hours are Wednesday-Saturday for lunch (11:30 am-2:30 pm) and dinner (5-9:30 pm), and Sunday for brunch (10 am-2:30 pm) and dinner (5-9:30 pm). Haven’t seen anything about the rebirth in any other media yet and thought my fellow ‘hounds would want to know.
