This past weekend I made a pit stop at Nunnery-Freeman Barbecue in Henderson NC, just off I-85, Exit 215.
The barbecue is good eastern NC style (most likely cooked in a Kook-Rite Kooker made by the Nunnery-Freeman Mfg. Co.) and they have an unusual thin sauce with a brownish tint, but the real attraction is the hush puppies.
With my small tray of cue I got a big basket of hush puppies right out of the fryer. Superb! Much lighter and crunchier than than your average hush puppy.
Interestingly, my dogs, who were in the car, didn't like them, whereas they loved the inferior hush puppies from Lexington Barbecue (the hush puppies being the only weak link there, of course).
