Last week a friend and I lunched at Ranch Milk in Freedom, near Watsonville.
Taqueria, convenience store, gas station and beer pub are at the ready here. Outdoor seating too.
Step up to the counter to order and then pick-up your food.
Make a stop at the self-serve salsa bar for a creamy avocado-based salsa verde, a fiery red chile salsa, and an even hotter orange-hued peanut and chile one. Best item on the bar, the plump, grilled jalapeño peppers.
An enchilada plate was one of the day's specials, Ordered with beef, the filling was diced carne asada without any added sauce or seasoning. The brick red mole was deep and complex. Beans and rice were average. My friend said her pollo asado burrito was pretty good. A basket of stale chips set us back $2.
No beer for either of us this day. On the third Thursday of the month, Ranch Milk features a brewery tap takeover.
Fill your gas tank as you leave. Prices are some of the lowest around.
