Rainier Restaurant

Many of you probably know already that Rainier Ave features a wide range of the good, the bad, and the unfamiliar in food. Vietnamese eateries abound, but one that is pleasantly overlooked and worth the trip is Rainier Restaurant & BBQ (2919 Rainier Ave S). The sign advertises Chinese-Vietnamese cuisine, but I suggest you stick to the Vietnamese side of the menu for the best of what they offer. The ambiance does not spring from the decor (cheap chairs, flourescents) but a great vibe is on hand thanks to cheery groups of Vietnamese men drinking Heinekins and playing with their cell phones (American style "Bia Hoi" perhaps?). According to management, people travel for miles to sample their "Charbroiled Pork". The menu has a few pork entries so order it by name. The other reigning favorite in my household is the "Rare Beef Salad". It's just what it sounds like and it's amazing. We haven't ventured an order off the "other" menu - which is only offered if you ask for it. One of these days we'll work up the nerve to order one of the bbq goat entrees. Portions are generous and the quality has been consistent over the six months I've been a customer. Three televisions display a surveillance shot of the parking lot for those of you who worry about such things. Strongly recommended!
