Looking for a quirky/fun large restaurant in San Francisco

Since I know from long experience how knowledgeable the Chowhounds are, I've decided to come to you to look for some ideas.

I'm in the process of planning a wedding, and I'm looking for a place to host the rehearsal dinner, or possibly a restaurant reception. Given the personalities of everyone involved, the emphasis is going to be on fun.

We're considering Buca di Beppo (decent food, huge portions, the right kitschy ambiance for our family), but I'm not super-thrilled about the fact that BdB is a chain restaurant. We also like La Rondella in the Mission (the decor!), but think it may end up being too small.

Can you think of any large, local, not-too-expensive fun restaurants that might fit the bill? San Francisco is preferable, but willing to consider elsewhere. The one dealbreaker: can't be seafood, due to groom allergies.
