Quietly spectacular upscale restaurant for birthday?

Feilin | Oct 11, 200508:21 AM

My husband and I will be in L.A. on business (mine) on his birthday, and internet research has thus far turned up no obvious dinner options. He's a foodie who loves fresh (and preferably local) ingredients in inventive combinations. We're coming in from New York---for bicoastal advice-givers, I'd love to find something in L.A. that approximates NYC's Annisa or Blue Hill.

I considered Michael's, but I know he'd prefer something less "landmark-y." Accomplished food, low-key and personal romantic atmosphere are what I'm looking for. Something that might distinguish the place from what we can get in NYC would be great too (e.g. California or Pacific Rim cuisine) but is by no means essential. Any ideas? Area doesn't matter; we'll travel.

Thanks much. Am curious to hear responses.
