Quiet, nice atmosphere, good but affordable?

Me and my significant other are coming to NYC saturday, with two friends who have never been there before. We plan to celebrate our friends' recent wedding by taking them out to dinner; we can't afford anything too expensive (she's a grad student, I'm currently unemployed) but still want it to be a nice place, with good food. We planned on Lupa because we've been there before and liked it, and the backroom was nice and quiet. But we waited too long to make a reservation, they're all booked up. Anyone have suggestions for an alternative? Doesn't have to be any particular type of food, just good, quiet, nice but not too pricey. Thanks!
