I paid a short visit to San Diego this past weekend. The main food highlight was a trip to Tijuana, which I have posted about here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/923086
Otherwise, I had a few other good bites and food experiences:
Gelateria Frizzante in La Jolla: Tried the sour peach which was interesting, but went with the coconut and passionfruit. Nice smooth texture, both flavors were from the 'sorbet' (dairy free) section. It was my first visit to this place, and the quality seemed really good overall.
The Cottage in La Jolla: This has been my go-to spot for brunch ever since my first visit back in 2007. Split the crab cake benedict and the classic french toast, just like I have done in the past. Both good. It was crowded when we arrived, and they estimated a 1 hour wait. During this time we went to the farmer's market and shared a waffle from a stand there, and had some coffee. Came back 1 hour later, and we were seated right away.
LIV Juice Bar - Hillcrest - Nice place to stop after the Mexico trip. I had the #7 Acapulco Gold smoothie, and it was very good. Nice alternative to Jamba Juice.
The Homebrewer - North Park - Not an eating establishment, but we went here to buy supplies, since my friends were making beer. A really nice place, helpful staff. I don't know much about beer making, but if I were a home brewer, I'd definitely start here.
Homegrown Meats - La Jolla - Bought a flank steak here on sale, and grilled it for dinner. Nice local butcher with sustainable, grass-fed beef.
