Quick reports--Florent and Benoit

Lucia | Jun 13, 2008 07:12 PM

Last night I had possibly my last meal at Florent. As expected, it was a madhouse, and walk-ins were only being taken at the bar (people had reservations for tables?!?!). After a 50 min wait, my friend and I sat down and opted to order the prix fixe. I had the steak salad for my main--nicely cooked and good quality as usual. Nice cheesecake for dessert. My friend liked his pate, chicken, and creme caramel. I really wanted to get the crab cake sandwich, but it wasn't on the menu. It'll be sad to see Florent go.

Tonight was dinner w/another friend at Benoit. They started us off w/a small plate of some nice gougeres along w/the bread basket and properly melty butter. We had a dozen escargots for an appetizer--very nice preparation. I enjoyed my halibut main w/asparagus, although the champagne sabayon was a bit too thick (the consistency of mayo) for my taste. We also split a side of the creamed spinach, which was good. My friend's salmon looked great, and she enjoyed (and finished) it. We had the baba au rhum for dessert, which was very good--properly soaked and moist w/a very good homemade whipped cream on the side. All in all a good, if a bit pricey meal. Wine by the glass prices were especially high (I think the cheapest white was $12).
