Thanks to Chowhound Steve who pointed me to the directions on their website, I finally found the place after a futile attempt last time in the area. Having enjoyed a fine meal with Steve at Chope's the night before (posted on the Southwest board) I didn't go overboard, but enjoyed my meal and look forward to return visits.
They are renowned for gorditas and I can see why. I went with a ground beef version (the other option is chile colorado), served with some lettuce, chopped tomato and a bit of shredded cheddar on the side. This was one impressive antojito. The masa pocket was fried up just right, perhaps a tad greasy, but dead on. Toothsome and crunchy and tender all at the same time. The beef filling was nice...good quality ground taco meat...a bit of cheese and a spoonful of their salsa made for some perfect bites.
I also had their stacked cheese enchiladas with green chile. Even though Canutillo is in Texas, this dish is more New Mexican. The green had some nice heat, but not much flavor and was too soupy for my liking. Plenty of cheese was a plus, but no onion (that I could tell) was a minus. Next time it is red chile and raw onion in the enchiladas for me.
All in all, a 'hound-worthy hang, deserving of the accolades.
