Took a drive up from Boston a couple weeks ago starting with lunch at Jitto's in Hampton (or Portsmouth, right on Rt. 1). Have passed this place 100 times and glad we finally stopped in, split a small steak tip and cheese sub w/ fries for a great lunch deal, about $7. Just the right amount of food knowing we were going to hit happy hour once we got to Portland. Sat at the bar of Petite Jacqueline and had a nice pour of rosé for $3, a draft and the mushroom/cheese crepe. Plus some deviled eggs. After regrouping, we sat at the bar of Hugo's and had fried eel and a nicely tweaked Penicillin cocktail. Can't remember what else we got but another place we had yet to visit. Ended with a nightcap at Vena's Fizz House, I picked the wrong drink but nice place. I see a whole slew of cocktail places have cropped up.
Sat. we passed by Hi Fi donuts which I hadn't seen before, good donuts with a nice cross of old school and new flavors. Met a friend for brunch at Artemisia Cafe on Pleasant St. Was happy to be able to sit right down and split a tasty plate of chorizo hash and eggs. And their donuts were great too. Excellent service. Grabbed iced coffee at Arabica, shopped around town then walked down to Thompson's Point to try Stroudwater Distillery which was a zoo. Bissell Bros was a zoo too. That evening we started at the bar of Hot Suppa and split an app of fried green tomatoes with our cocktails. People think of this as a breakfast spot but the evening menu is interesting. We then walked over to Isa Bistro where we'd been last year and really enjoyed. Split three apps and it was excellent. A couple games of ping pong at Ernie's then ended the night at Geno's where a friend's band was playing.
Sun. morning we got donuts at Tony's then wandered around town a little. Lunch was at Spud's in Rowley MA on the way back down Rt. 1, another spot we'd passed by many a time. Serviceable spot but once is probably enough.
Highly recommend Isa which isn't at the top of everyone's list when they visit Portland but should be.
