need quick cake first aid for tonight

I received the following e-mail just now:

Help-

Last night I finished the cake for tonight. I made the icing--melted chocolate, whipping cream, chill, beat. It has never gone wrong before, last night it wouldn't get hard! I beat and chilled and beat and chilled and it was still liquid (yummy for ice-cream but that is about all). I finally resorted to mixing in confectioner's sugar--hated to, afraid it would ruin the cake, but I was getting desperate. It thickened up a bit and I spread it on the cake and stuck the cake in the fridge hoping that it would get harder. This morning I pulled it out to take a peak and all of the icing had run off the cake and was puddle in the bottom of the cake box! I don't have time to start over with the wipped cream icing (and I am a little scare of that at this point). I could scrape off the rest of the icing, move the cake to another plate and ice it with something, but what???? Any suggestions as to how I can pull this one off?

I'm curious what would cause a simple ganache icing to fail. Any ideas? I recommended scraping of all but 1/8 inch for a crumb coat and then icing w/ simple sweetened whipped cream. + a melted choc drizzle for garnish. Any other ideas for my friend?
