Hello NYC Hounds! I will be visiting from the SF Bay Area for a quick trip in July, arriving at JFK at 10 pm on a Monday night and leaving Wed at 1 pm. I'm staying near Midtown/Chelsea. I've done some preliminary research (I found the Infatuation website, which is new since my last visit) and would love feedback and other suggestions. A few background factors:
- I love to eat and am definitely going to pay out of pocket since my office only pays a gov't per diem. On my last 2 trips to NYC (almost 5 years ago now), my husband tagged along and we ate at Eleven Madison Park, Daniel, Le Bernardin, Jean-Georges, Bouley, Annisa, and Betony. I wrote trip reports here and see that we really loved EMP and JG. I tried to get into EMP again but am on the waiting list as I didn't set an alarm to get up at 6 am PST.
- I'm always happy to eat at high end restaurants that feature incredible food one can't make at home. My husband cooks quite a bit and we have a ton of great ethnic food in the SF Bay Area, so I'd prefer to focus on seafood or French fare. But I'm also open to other suggestions of unique fare that's harder to get in SF. Finally, since I'm a solo diner this time around, I'm also thinking of sitting at the bar so it's less awkward to eat alone for 2 hours at a table.
- I'd prefer to stay in Manhattan as I don't like taking public transit late at night. I do have 1 lunch available on my trip so I could go to Brooklyn or elsewhere for a "destination" restaurant.
My first meal will be late Monday night. I don't arrive until 10 pm EST at JFK, so I'm trying to find restaurants open late at night. I'm thinking of walking in to Gramercy Tavern straight from JFK (I fly carry-on only). Yet I worry my flight may be delayed, my taxi will hit traffic, or some other delay that means I can't make it there before they close at 11 pm. So my back-up idea is Sushi Seki Chelsea since it's open until 1 am and is not too far from my hotel. Other suggestions?
I plan to stay on PST, so I won't be up for breakfast the next morning. I do need to grab a quick bite before an 11:30 am meeting near Times Square. Any suggestions for a nearby place for a bagel with lox or otherwise quick breakfast? I'll also need a breakfast suggestion for the following morning before I head to Penn Station to take the train to DC.
I have one lunch in NYC, probably 1 pm or so. I was thinking about Cafe Boulud or returning to Jean Georges. But I'm also open to new ideas!
Finally, I also need one more dinner spot, after an event at District Social that likely will run until 8 pm or so. I'm on the waiting list for EMP but am not confident I will get a spot. Ideas?
Thanks in advance!
