Questions re Boulevard and Slanted Door

We're visiting from NY and are having dinner with some friends at Boulevard in a couple of weeks. Are there any can't miss dishes on the current menu? And what's appropriate dress? Is my husband ok in nice pants and shirt or does he need a jacket?

We've been planning on going to Slanted Door with our 3 year old for a couple of reasons. 1. It's the Slanted Door and its general reputation is very, very good. 2. I make a recipe Phan had in F&W several years ago (Caramelized Black Pepper Chicken) that my son loves, loves, loves (He asks regularly for "vienanese chicken") and I thought he'd get a kick out of going to the restaurant, although we've carefully explained that that particular dish is not on the menu and he's going to have to eat other, equally yummy, things. But now I'm having second thoughts because so many people on this board seem less than enthusiastic. I hate to spend that kind of money, put up with a very noisy restaurant and have an "eh" experience. Is there somewhere reasonably convenient to our Union Sq. hotel where we can count on great Vietnamese food?
