Question about timing....

Just back from an extremely unsatisfying trip to an as of now, unnamed Italian establishment in, let's say Morris County. North of 80 kind of Morris County. Appetizer to entrée, over an hour. Would you say, after said hour, that cancelling the entrée order and asking for the check is pushing the limits of good taste, or entirely appropriate? We decided to cancel the entrée order after three reassurances that they were on their way, and were met with some resistance from the staff. I even asked that they pack it to go, but that suggestion was dismissed. So we paid for what we ate and drank, and left. Faux pas...or entirely justifiable?
