Question on libations/corkage

I'm not familiar with the liquor laws in L.A. so this may be a simple question to answer...

- Seems that there are places that serve hard drinks.
- Some serve only beer and wine.
- Some don't serve anything, but let you bring in vino (and pay corkage).

Regarding the latter, is there a legal reason one can't bring in a nice beer or pre-mixed cocktail?

I can understand a restaurant not wanting to deal with someone chugging rotgut from a brown paper bag (or incur the liability woes), but if one can bring 3 bottles of wine to a place, how is that different from bringing a 6-pack of microbrews, or sipping a fave cognac?

Would a corkage place get busted if I was sipping a home-built Gin & Tonic? I have total respect for restaurant owners and would never put them in that position. Just wondering about the rules.
