Question about beef tenderloin/filet mignon

OK, I want to serve filet to some dinner guests this weekend.

Question: Does it make a difference whether I buy pre-cut filet steaks or just buy a whole beef tenderloin and cut my own steaks? Both filets and whole tenderloins are available at the Costco--the tenderloin is about $1.50 cheaper by the pound.

If I cut the tenderloin into 1.5" to 2" thick slabs, will I have filet mignon or will I have something different?
