I tried something different at one of my local taquerias(Greenville NC) yesterday- fried quail. It was really excellent, well fried, juicy and had a great mix of spices. The spices were really well done and not overpowering- touches of onion, garlic, and I think cumin. I got take out, so I couldn't ask exactly what went into it.
Is this a popular dish in Mexico or in other NC taquerias? I can't say that I've seen it on the menu anywhere else that I've been to, and fried quail is a pretty common rural Southern dish, so I'd wondered if this wasn't a sop to local tastes, although it's rare to see non-Hispanics in this place.
