When I was in town in November, my friend who had lived in Singapore before was raring to take me to QQ Kopitiam.

Though the menu is small, it was impossible for us to whittle down and wound up ordering three noodle dishes for the two of us.

Though work used to take me to Singapore frequently, the combination Char Ho Fun was not familiar to me. The lovely lady proprietress advised us to try to finish this one during our lunch as it would not reheat well as leftovers. Gently stir-fried rice noodles were bathed in a silky egg gravy and topped with shrimp, fish cake, barbecue pork and colorful fresh veggies. A spot of the terrific housemade sambal brought out even more flavor dimension

The Singapore Laksa is the best version I've had on this side of the Pacific. And unlike too many others, this rich coconut curry rice noodle soup actually included the laksa herb for its special pungence. Char Kway Teow was a masterful umami-bomb. I'd say it was better than less carefully crafted versions at some hawker stands in S'pore. The snipped Chinese chives, breath of the wok, singed rice noodles, all wonderful other than missing the sweet cockles of Southeast Asia.

While portions were not huge, I still can't help wonder how this spot can serve up such great fast food for only $9.45 per plate. I should also mention how good the fish cake was in these noodle dishes. And while I did not ask, I'd suspect that the kitchen makes its own.
