Ordinarily, one would not expect great food to come from a church-related Rescue Mission (!) but PJR's Fish & BBQ in West Montgomery, AL is anything but ordinary. Located at 222 W. Jeff Davis Ave (334.263.7966), it is almost inaccessible thanks to a tangled web of one-way streets. A sort of "you can't get there from here" location but persevere. It is difficult to find AND worth the effort. "City Suits" are seated next to uniformed police, some personnel from nearby Maxwell AFB and neighborhood folk -- all enjoying some of the best collard greens, hushpuppies, catfish & BBQ to be found. If what you want is not on the menu, just ask. I made my own combination plate and very happy that I did. Both waitstaff and kitchen crew are polite and helpful. The single item that can stand some tweaking is the chicken because it suffered from overcooking, but everything else is delicious. You will absolutely swoon for the Sweet Potata Pie so be sure to leave some room. Read the menu and enjoy the tongue-in-cheek vernacular of "samiches", "dranks" and my personal favorite, "Sweet Jesus Ice Tea". PJR's is neat as a pin, clean and makes you feel good, in addition to being well-fed. Be sure to write a ditty for the wall to commemorate your visit and hope that it will be the beginning of a lasting relationship. PJR's has limited hours, serving lunch only Tues& Wed, with early supper on Thurs (6PM) Fri & Sat (7PM).
