when to put in applesauce while baking

I'm wondering about how to use applesauce. Depending on the intended purpose (for example, moistener or coagulater), when it the best time to put the applesauce in? For example, I'm trying to adapt a muffin recipe to make it moister, and mixed it in with the eggs. But I wonder if the texture will come out differently if I had mixed it up with the butter instead, or put it in separately.
