I had the pleasure of visiting this charming outpost for refined Filippino food. I ordered the lumpia to start, and then I felt compelled to order the special for December, Bicol Express. The Bicol is a volcanic region which has a distinctive cuisine that features coconut cream and plenty of chilies.
I had long heard of this micro-cuisine, and I was completely satisfied with the result. It was pork loin and fat with coconut cream, ginger, shrimp paste, and lots of chopped green chilies. There was a good amount of heat but still it was restrained. The dish was everything you could love about home cooking done right. There was not much of a sauce as the coconut had been cooked into the pork so that all the moisture clung tight to the ingredients.
I am not sure I've ever had lumpia I love, and this was no exception. Eating deep fried wrapper surrounding vegetables is never bad, but this version did not stand out.
I won't let much time pass before I am back.
