Purchase, transport & killing live Dungeness crab?

Auggiedog | Dec 28, 201810:37 AM     13

Hi! Haven’t been on Chowhound for more than a decade since first moving to Bay Area. Chowhound sure looks different :-) I live part-time in Oakland, part-time in foothills near Yosemite. I want to bring live crab back home today. Where is the best place to purchase clean, feisty, meaty ones? Used to go to a Chinatown shop but it has apparently closed.

Also, anyone know the best way to keep them, and a humane way to kill them? To transport and store: I’ve tried on ice in a cooler with the lid cracked, in the fridge, in a cooler with a little water and ice. We’ll probably eat them tomorrow. I usually just toss them into steamer or boiler but wonder now if it is more humane to try to pith them?

BTW Leaving them in a cooler on the deck at home in the country isn’t such a good idea as one year two live catfish disappeared overnight from a cooler whose lid I had left open fearing the lack oxygen would stress them too much before I killed them! Bear or raccoon or coyote had unexpectedly good NYE dinner.
