Pupusas (and more) at Taqueria Caporales, Merced

A co-worker had clued me in that this place on Main Street was under relatively new ownership and was becoming one of his favorites in town. I needed a snack on the way to a meeting downtown and pulled in. Very glad I did.

The building presumably was a drive in at some point, and there is plenty of shaded parking as well as some shaded picnic tables. Order at the window to take out or to enjoy at the tables.

The menu includes a number of breakfast items (including chilaquiles, (will need to come back to try those), tacos, a few tortas, and the usual, but the sign that said 'New: pupusas' caught my eye, as I don't know ofanywhere else in town that has them.

When I ordered two spinach pupusas the cook/server/probably owner told me it would be a ten or so minute weight, even though I was the only customer (I was there in between breakfast and lunch, presumably a slow time). A good sign. Sure enough, soon she was forming the dough, and chopping the fresh spinach! While I waited, I asked for a carnitas taco, which was also quite good (the small tortillas were not hand made, but they were fresh), and served with zanahorias and pickled onion on the side as well as cilantro and onion. The salsa was a bit thin, tomatillo based, semi-hot. Nice porky flavor on the meat, crispy edges.

The pupusas, once done, were delicious. Good curtido, more of the same thin salsa.

Sadly, they were out of Mexican soda other than orange, so I settled for a sweet ice tea (I was warned that it was sweet).

I look forward to going back for more pupusas, and to try more of the rest of the menu. If the snack I had is any indication, Caporales is likely to stay at or near the top of my taqueria list in Merced.

Edited to add the address, which is actually on I street, corner of I and Main:

711 I St Merced, CA 95340
