Can you pull yourself away from a favorite haunt just to try someplace new?

I did just that this past weekend. I don't often get up Salem way but when the ferry starts running, I can't resist at least one trip. So, I start to obsess, will I go to Old Spot for the Ploughman's lunch or Finz for some great oysters followed by the lobster mac & cheese. Instead of giving into temptation, I decide to try someplace new. First stop was Capt's Waterfront Grill, which I believe opened last summer. Perfect day to sit outside on their upstairs patio and enjoy the water views. The food -- sad to say, is really average. Went with the small plates, fried clams, tenderloin bites and a crab cake. Nothing stood out. However, when it came time for dessert I went with the sticky toffee pudding, which was wonderful. Warm sponge cake, topped with ice cream and toffee sauce, saved the meal. The next stop was O'Neils for a glass of wine and live Irish music which was a nice break after all the walking. So, I guess I'll stick with my favorite haunts and wonder if that tends to be what people do.
