Last night, my husband and I experienced a wonderful evening at El Arrayan, an excellent Puerto Vallarta restaurant that has been open for three months now. The restaurant itself is lovely to behold and the owner (Carmen Porras) and her staff are welcoming and helpful. The food is outstanding. We wanted to sample as many different selections as possible and so ordered more than was really necessary. Our appetizers were Empanadas de platano (plantain fritters), Tostaditas (with escabeche pickled duck, sesame seeds tortilla chip, lettuce, tomato, and avocado), and Garnachitas del D.F. (small thin tortilla topped with chicken, red and green salsa and chopped onion.
For the main course, we ordered the Carnitas de pato (Mexican duck confit with arrayan-orange sauce and Ensalada tibia de la Bisabuela Carmen (warm vegetable salad; Carmen's great-grandmothers recipe for chayote, green beans and zuccni with fresh oregano , vinegar, and olive oil). We ate every last morsel of the duck confit and will certainly head back for more of it. It was perfectly crisped on the outside and amazingly moist and flavorful on the inside. The chayote, green beans, and zucchini dish was the perfect accompaniment to the confit. We have had duck confit many times but never one that held a candle to the delectable version served at El Arrayan.
Still not wanting to end the magical meal, we ordered three desserts: Pina al tequila cuervo tradicional (tequila pineapple with Cuervo Tradicional, cooked in raw sugar syrup and topped with lime cream), Helados y nieves (ice cream and sorbet made by Gelatti Da Vinci but designed by Carmen), and a fabulous housesmade chocolate flan. My husband is a gelato freak and has subjected me to "E ticket" drives from Rome to Florence just to go to his favorite gelateria. It took only one taste of each of the three selections last night to proclaim that they were all outstanding.
I highly recommend this new restaurant and am looking forward to returning in the near future.
