I went out witha friend on saturday to celebrate his discovery that his wife is "up the duff" as we say.

I just wanted to rave and recommend two pubs.

1) The Wenlock Arms ( Wenlock Road- Islington ) I have mentioned this before, but to my mind it is the best pub in town. Very unreconstructed and consequently not full of kids or suits. A real grotty old boozer. The real glory of this pub though is the landlord's skill at seeking out 10 guest ales which change on a monthy basis. On this visit I had a pint of Kentish Cider, cloudy, strong and incredibly fruity, A pint of Adnams Fisherman ( brewed only in January, I think ) dark and rich and a Battersby Mild. They always insist on having at least one mild on offer every month. This is a real gem . The only down side is that it is on the CAMRA circuit so sometimes you find it full of beardy people wearing arran sweaters and singing folks songs about leaving Liverpool never to return, even though they are probably welders from Dagenham.

2) O Hanlon's ( Amwell St - Exmouth Market ) an irish pub that is not full of plastic shamrocks etc, but is full of the most wonderful beers that are brewed by the owners. A Dry Stout, A Red Ale, A Port Stout and a truly bitter bitter.

They say man can not live by Lamb Tagine alone ( or something like that) so I heartily recommend trying either of these two
